Introduction
With this tour, we focus on Barcelona's relationship with the sea in three of the city's districts: the Barceloneta (the former fishermen's quarter which remains the best area to find a quality seafood restaurant), the Ribera (which became wealthy in the Middle Ages through maritime trade), and the Barrio Chino (where the sailors past and present have looked for what only they consider a good night out…).
We start off in the Barceloneta, the former fishermen's quarter: Fishy tales will be told about this picturesque area, in which nearly every bar has invented a special dish or tapa to tempt you.
A glass of chilled cava provides a refreshing link between the Barceloneta and the next district we visit, the Ribera, the former maritime district which, thanks to Catalonia's thriving sea trade, became extremely wealthy in the Middle Ages and which is part of the Barrio Gótico (Barcelona's Old Town), where sardines and octopus are the culinary protagonists. Our tour ends up in the city's Barrio Chino, the former red-light district, where sailors sought (and still try to find) a good time and, er, “companionship”. Here we will visit one of the area's more picturesque establishments to give you a flavour of its unique ambience.
Another feature we will explain during the course of our evening stroll will be how, in recent years, Barcelona has once again opened itself up to the sea, with new beaches and coastal developments, following a number of decades in which it had turned its back on one of the key elements that has made the city what it is today.
